What is The Long Reply?

This began, as many bad ideas do, in a comment thread.

The Long Reply is a home for essays, arguments, and productive distractions: writing that begins in the lower reaches of the internet, then outgrows the comment box.

It’s where I put the replies that became too long, the arguments that needed more care, and the stray thoughts that somehow turned into essays. Some pieces begin as responses to politics, current affairs, history, ethics, or culture. Others are fragments, reviews, provocations, or acts of overthinking.

The site is written by Tom J. Elston.

Expect writing across five broad themes:

Politics & Power
History & Memory
Ethics & Argument
Culture & Play
Notes & Fragments

Stay with the Argument

New essays are sent directly to your inbox, so you do not have to remember to check back. You can also read through the Substack app, which offers a cleaner reading experience, audio options, and comment notifications.

The Long Reply is not meant to be the last word. Join the discussion in the comments, offer opinions, make objections, and help turn a finished essay back into a living argument.
